Wanting to give suggestion to an array of awesome holiday experiences, to which some of us may refer to as a Bucket List, but I wanted to clarify when and where the Bucket List come from?
Well, if you've clicked on the Bucket List link, you'd have read it was based on a movie released in 2007 that featured Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman - with those two actors, this movie is now on my DVD rental list.
The Bucket List is a personal thing, your desires and wishes of things you wish to do. What's fun about the bucket list, is it is something that you'll enjoy doing, remember for a lifetime and maybe never do again. So, here a few bucket list suggestions, but I'm sure you've got your own...
1. staying in a hotel where your favourite movie actor/actress once stayed.
2. swim with a whale shark - slow moving filter feeding shark, can be 12m in length.
3. go to India and help build a village.
4. with friends rent a riad in Morocco.
5. relax on a beach in the Cook Island.

It is whatever you want it to be....

Operating a travel business and being a busy consultant, means a lot of time is spent sitting at the desk in front of the computer. Daily on the computer screen, I see endless deals for romancing at resorts, volunteering holidays abroad, extensive car leasing, cruising the Caribbean to trekking in stunning locations, and that is without mentioning the airline deals.

Lucy has recently returned from the USA after being invited to exhibit at the "Birds in Art". Its the second year, Lucy has been asked to attend the exhibition and of course she has been delighted in the experience.
To meet Lucy, she is dynamic - friendly, great sense of humour, a farmer, a committee member, a sculptor, I'm not sure about her cooking abilities, but I'm sure there is much more to this talented person. So, TWAD asks her a few questions:
When, where and who with was your first overseas holiday?
It was awhile ago...I was 5 when my mother and I went to the UK to meet the extended family. I still associate sounds and smells to that trip, such as my great Aunts kitchen.

What do you enjoy or not enjoy about travelling?
I love getting to know a culture and experiencing what a 'local' does, and the way travelling changes your perspective on life when you return.

Your accommodation favourites?
I like to stay somewhere central, where you are surrounded by the culture, if it be stepping outside your apartment in Split and hearing the locals cooking dinner upstairs or peering out a window on safari and seeing a heard of elephants wonder by.

How do people overseas respond to your work and you being Australian?
Generally they all comment on Australia's wildlife and their unique characteristics. So far, I think they respond quite well, we'll see if they invite me for a third time round!

Next stop?
Tough choice, but I've always wanted to go to South America.

a sailing holiday in tonga...

Wow, "a holiday", that's how I felt about taking off with Virgin Australia to join friends in Tonga for eight days of sailing. Yes, I get to travel often, but it is for work which means meetings and resort inspections - a job I do love, otherwise I wouldn't do it. But to take off on a holiday and be with friends, to share the laughter, the days activities, a relaxing knock-off at the end of the day and now the photos - is fab.
The flight itself to Tonga was intriguing, mostly Tongan's and by the chat, laughter and acknowledgements it would seem, they all new each other.

Tonga is made of three main groups of islands - Tongatapu/Eua, Ha'apai and Vava'u. My interest was going to Vava'u (which has been said to be paradise) and swim with whales. Whales sharks is what was on my list...I was told they are there, but it is mostly Humpback Whales that people go to watch and swim with.

As far as sailing goes, you go where the wind takes you - well, maybe not literally. We ended up spending the week sailing the Ha'apai group with no disappointment or regret - I didn't get to sail to Vava'u or swim with the whales. But what I, we did get to experience was: Whale watching daily from either catamaran whilst sailing or the zodiac as we explored the islands after anchoring the cat. Snorkelling over what seemed to be endless coral...you can only snorkel so far! Skurfing for the first time for Lucy and I. Drinking coconut juice straight from a coconut plucked from the island and amazing fresh fish caught from the ocean. Walking on remote islands, where only a couple or no people lived, but maybe a pig or two!

I departed and my friends sailed on to Vava'u, they said I experienced the pick of what Tonga had to offer. Vava'u is more touristy, it has more yachts and they sighted less whales. But there are a few whale watching/swimming companies there, so the whales are there.

it all started a several years ago when I met Jane Webster at a spa cuisine cooking class at Lake House, Daylesford. She spoke of her chateau in France and I spoke of Travel With A Difference, over the years we maintained contact.

10 year celebration...

Wow, ten years! Travel With A Difference was just a seed, that appeared in my thoughts - it was about visiting and exploring destinations in comfort and style, that didn't involve brass and marble. I never thought it would come to fruition, it was just a concept, a nice feel good idea.
I had spent three years travelling overseas and had dabbled in the worlds of skiing, sailing and surfing. I was in my early twenties and it was all about meeting great people, being in different environments, being social and active during the day and into the night. So, I got a job within the travel industry, as it was the joy of meeting people, experiencing destinations and cultures, that I had decided I wanted from life.
After the arduous applications, I received my own travel licence on 14 June 2001. At the beginning I worked on TWAD and at the Geelong Advertiser, until TWAD could sustain me. At the end of August 2001, I committed to working fulling time within TWAD. Within two weeks the September 11 tragedy occurred, followed by sars, chicken flue, Bali bombings, the collapse of Ansett. It was a tough two years for all.

I've reflected over the years on what I've wanted and received and enjoyed. Now, I plan on what I want for life, as I believe happiness is a very important aspect of life. I am grateful for the family holidays we had as kids, it was the travelling and exploring, the freedom we had and the creativity to entertain ourselves that I thank my parents for. As the cliche goes "it's all character building".

It is endless, the number of travel updates that come into our office daily, these two I thought were of interest....
Qantas have advised that taking effect on 13 April is Qantas Advance Seat Selection. This means that you will have to pay $20 for your seating request unless... you are a First, Business or Premium Economy passenger or if flying Economy and you are a Platinum, Gold or Silver Qantas Frequent Flyer. If flying domestically seating selection will remain complimentary.
Virgin Blue have announced their Brisbane and Melbourne lounges are being refurbished and will be closed. Casual entry into the lounges will not be available, temporary lounges will be operating on reduced capacity with limited facilities.
The Melbourne lounge will close 9 April for several weeks and temporary.
So, you've been warned, you can now be prepared if you thought you'd sit and relax in the Melbourne lounge...I'm sure the outcome will be fab.

a group adventure in thailand...

Mary Myer, one of TWAD's delightful consultants recently travelled with a family group to Thailand and now she shares some words of their experiences...

Thailand –what a wonderful destination to travel through with a family, young and old alike will enjoy soaking up the culture and the sun in this friendly country.

I was recently given the opportunity to travel with my family group there in December, and they are still talking about it. One of the many highlights for the children was a visit to the Tiger Temple just out of Bangkok. This tour can be combined with a trip to the famous Bridge Over the River Kwai. Visitors get the chance to pat, bottle feed and play with four month old tiger cubs. A magical experience! A volunteer program is also in place there.

Our 3 busy days in Bangkok included having made to measure suits fitted for the men; then we flew to Chiang Mai, a beautiful place in the North. Here we were fortunate to spend a full day with “Eddie’s Elephant Camp” learning the commands used to ride and train an elephant. We began with instruction on some basic Thai language before we were welcomed into in a local, private home where a delicious lunch was provided.

Everyone had a turn at “driving” the elephant which was hilarious.
Chiang Mai is famous for it’s silk and has some gorgeous handicrafts for sale; ladies if you want any outfits made, here is the place to have it done.

We stayed in 2 and 3 bedroom apartment style accommodation and the highlight was the JW Marriott at Mai Khao Beach, one hour North of Patong Beach in Phuket. The children/teens club offers many varied activities including Thai kickboxing, boot camp and sunset cycling tours into the local village were popular. This resort was family friendly but also catered well for parents wanting a quiet drink at one of the bars at sunset or a romantic dinner.
We spent a full day with John Grays sea kayaking adventure and for me this was the most memorable day of our whole trip. In the afternoon we learnt to make flower arrangements to be given up as offerings to the gods in the limestone caves at dusk. Our cave had about a dozen floating offerings alight with fragrant incense and candles. It was one of those AHA moments in life for me!
Our group enjoyed shopping for bargains in Patong Beach and the many restaurants which were clean and cheap.

An adventure holiday such as this has created priceless memories.

Of late, we've been speaking with a few to-be-brides with organising honeymoons and weddings. It is lovely and exciting to be discussing their desired honeymoon, as it is a once-in-a-life time celebration. They seem to have the initial concept of when, where and what and then it goes back to the fabulous husband-to-be for thoughts and discussions. We've been chatting with honeymooners for quite a few years now and it is interesting to note of late, it is mostly the bride coordinating the honeymoon as opposed to the groom. Am I wrong or am I not, but was the honeymoon traditionally coordinated by the groom? We've definately spoke with more grooms years ago, than what we do today. Maybe, the honeymoon has become more complex!
Either way, we've had some fab experiences with organising proposals, weddings, honeymoons and anniversaries. Oh, I should mention we still get the blokes coordinating that special anniversary and it is mostly a surprise....she just packs her bags and off they go to that somewhere special place.

During the GFC the government was urging us to take holidays, for us to spend and stimulate the economy... Well, some of us did and some of us didn't. For those that did, well done, you contributed to keeping monies moving and as you would've discovered and may discover further - you felt good for it!

What you gained and maybe you weren't conscious of or even aware of it, was the sense of happiness you felt when on holidays. During my years in travel I've meet some passionate persons, and through the spa industry I recently met a fellow, Dr Sebastion Filep, he and I were both at a Medical Tourism & Wellness Tourism conference. Travelling Solo - to do or not to do

For over twenty years I have been on and off planes, whether it be for work or leisure I have always managed to squeeze in some solo travelling. It has not been by choice, it has been a matter of circumstance. Work has you attending a conference, a private famil doing resort/hotel inspections or travelling from A-to-B to meet up with friends.

I look back at the times I've travelled solo and each time I recall saying "I'm not doing this again" . Huh, but some how, I find myself in that solo state of travelling once again. As much as I'm conscious of the feeling of being solo...lonely...bored..it happens, me travelling solo. Why do I loath solo travelling? There is nobody to share the moment with, sure there's the people in the train, plane or automobile, but are you going to see them again to share the heart felt moment you just experienced? Not likely.

Travelling solo can also have its rewards and attributes, such as allowing you to step out of your comfort zone and chat with a stranger, it allows time for you to see and do the things you want to see and do without compromise. I recall being in need of time-out, so I went to a spa health retreat - Kamalaya Koh Samui. It was fab, I was there for a week, I didn't speak to anyone beyond the staff for the first five days, I need that down time. Then I met a fab English woman there and had great chats for the next day and half.

Would you pay to plant your bum?

The airline industry grew to a lusious shape, expanding from regular economy seating to business spacious pod beds to the unreachable first class. Or is it? Flights were fully serviced with meals, wine, pillows, blankets and entertainment followed by the onset of lounges for desiring passengers wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of the airport and not to mention frequent flyer programs.

Then came the demise...the introduction of unserviced flights, where we have to purchase food, beverages and entertainment. Great, the people said and maybe it has been. But I've dealt with unserviced airlines overseas where additional purchases at time of booking included - luggage, insurance, carbon offsetting, seating - "what", were my thoughts! So, this slowly seaps in weighing down the the cost of a cheap airfare on an unserviced airline - remember, you still have to pay for food, beverages, entertainment, pillows and blankets.

So, whats happening now in this crazy world of flying is that a serviced airline such as British Airways are charging you to pay for a seating allocation - just advise your credit card number and your desired seating request. I'm not sure if this move from the airlines is creative, desperate or simply just giving passengers options!

French Passion...

Jane Webster is a pure inspiration for passion and getting what you want out of life. I met Jane years ago at a spa cuisine cooking class instructed by Alla Wolf-Tasker at Lake House, Daylesford. Her passion for all things French - especially food and her Chateau Bosgouet- and mine for travel, we kept in contact.

Over the years she has continued to host week long retreats of culinerary experiences at her Chateau, have her and her family move to France for a year, compile a book on her passion titled At My French Table and proceed to win awards.

I've just recieved word from her, that her book won an award in Australia for 'Best French Cuisine Cookbook' before going on to compete in the 'Best French Cuisine Cookbook in the World' in Paris, where she delighted in being awarded second place.

This to me, was just a reminder that nothing happens over night....but, what passion can do. And Jane, for 2010 will be contacting her The French Table retreats at her Chateau...congrats to Jane!

Surfing Samoa to offer aid...

All call from a client and I love his idea...take a surfing holiday to Samoa!

He, like us all has been exposed via the media of the natural disasters currently taking place within Asia and the Pacific. His desire to go surfing to a place of devastation intrigued me. So, with excitement I went off to source holiday package options.

Do I or don't I...not this time, it was a snap descision to escape for along weekend and visit a friend in the Murrary Riverland, Renmark and experience a destination I had never been too.

Having a travel business, there tends to be the hype that I should be jumping on a plane and travelling overseas on a journey of discovery at regular intervals. Yes, this was a plane journey but only for an hour, it did involve Virgin Blue next time I'd consider Rex for the convenience of checking in without queueing - I hear the planes a smaller, but hey, the thrill of the journey.

It was actually a great novelty embarking on an inland Australian getaway. Harry, my friend, was great taking me to sites to experience the parched orche sands, bracken like shrubbery, stunning gum trees, ferry crossings and of course wineries - Banrock Station is a great winery that puts monies back into sustaining the surrounding wetlands - and tasty foods. On our drives we stopped at Cammies Antiques, where I purchased a little set of whisky glasses - thinking more in the line they'll be used for liquors, a second hand book shop where I was able to purchase a book of my favourite travelling novelist W. Somerset Maugham.

There was so much more we experienced in our days of driving, it's amazing what you can fit into a weekend when you're away from home. The town was a buzz the local Renmark Rovers won the footy grandfinal...oh, the footy season! It was all fun and great to be away experiencing a destination different to my beautiful coastal surrounds.
